Tips for Returning Home After an Emergency

Tips for Returning Home After an Emergency

Inspect Your Surroundings with Caution

  • Be cautious around trees, power poles, and structures that may have been weakened by the high winds.

Gas Safety Check

  • One of the first things you should do is smell for gas leaks. Do this before you turn on any electricity or ignite any flame.
  • If you turned your gas off before leaving, do not turn it back on yourself. Leave this to professionals.
  • If there are any issues with your gas lines, or to turn your gas back on, contact SoCal Gas at 1-800-427-2200 for assistance.

Electrical Check

  • If there’s no electricity upon your return, check if the main breaker is turned on. Some homes in Bel Air Crest have had their power restored as of 5:00 PM last night. If your home is still without power, please contact LADWP at 1-800-DIAL-DWP (1-800-342-5397).

Caution with Ash and Burned Materials

Burned materials and ash may contain hazardous chemicals. Use the following precautions:

  • Wash your hands and boots before entering vehicles or departing your property.
  • Avoid touching your face or others until you’ve cleaned thoroughly.
  • Use “wet” cleaning towelettes to clean exposed skin.
  • Mist ash lightly with water and sweep gently with a broom or wet mop.
  • Wear an N-95 mask, protective eyewear, long sleeves, long pants, shoes, and socks when cleaning ash.
  • Do not use a leaf blower or your garden hose to clean around a damaged home, as it may spread hazardous materials into the air, sewers or storm drains.
